The 49ners Football team is located in San Francisco and were founded in 1946. This is a well establish team and have won 5 superbowls. The 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise based in San Francisco. They are the 10th oldest franchise in the NFL

A gold rush prospector –themed character first appeared in the 1970s. The character's design reflected the cover art of programs created by William Kay between 1946 and 1949.

Previous mascot was a mule named clementine

Sourdough Sam typically wears a cardinal football jersey, despite the 49ers' current selection of team color being 49ers Red, and his jersey number is 49.
